Unwired Group is now Unwired Networks, one year later

Arguably it’s been a rough year taking off for us, and that’s partially because we’re still pretty small. But a lot has come from this past year, we’ve grown exponentially, and we have plans on expanding our work beyond news (which we’ll discuss in a future post, sometime later).

This post is to help highlight some major changes that are going on behind the scenes, particularly one that is significant to how we appear to you. When we began last year with Unwired Loop, we thought that just having the name Unwired Group would be fine, but as we began working and testing new ideas, it became clear that we’re more then a “Group”, but more of a Network.

So when you visit this site, or look at the copyright below, as well as our Twitter, Facebook and Google+ pages, you’ll see Unwired Networks, LLC instead of The Unwired Group, Ltd.

We’ll see you soon, as we have some cool announcements we’ll be making!

2012 brings a fresh, new start

uw-emblemLast year was kind of a starting point for Unwired Group, and moreso Unwired Loop, the flagship of our brand, and a lot of broken promises and goals were not met. But that’s not to say that this year isn’t going to have it’s hurdles either.

This year we’ve got a lot of things in store to help re-create that image we once had by bringing fresh content, a whole new re-design (which we’ll discuss shortly, so stay tuned for that).

Our goal for this year is to not only get the network off the ground, but to open our first official office which will feature products and services of your liking, as well as corporate workmanship, something that has been lacking for some time now.

It’s going to be a good year, and we hope to make you a part of it, so stay tuned, and as always we would love to hear from you!

Our long downtime

Over the past few days we’ve been working on placing our site on a more powerful server, with a lot more breathing room, unfortunately, as you all saw over the past few days was the downtime. While our attempts were unsuccessful (merely because of configuration issues) we have a better understanding of what our goals our for when we finally make the transition to better hardware.

So what happened? The server we’re moving the network to is on a Windows Server (2008 R2 to be exact) while our current server is using Ubuntu Server 10.10. While this shouldn’t make any bit of difference, both IIS 7.5 and Apache refused to work regarless of what configuration we decided to throw at it. It was like the child who refused to do anything. That left us with some very challenging problems, and long hours of troubleshooting the problem.

Now understand that both Apache HTTP Server and IIS are two different servers, but the content on our site wasn’t, in fact we had identical MySQL and PHP configurations, why the site wasn’t resolving or working didn’t make any sense.

Now that we’re back, I’d like to personally apologize to everyone who had to deal with the downtime, we know how much it means to you all that we remain online, and post relevant content for you to consume. We hope to be better prepared when we roll out the new server along with the redesign.

Sincerely,

Iian Kehn, Founder/CEO
